You may choose to refer a patient when they:

  • Require 24/7 emergency care beyond your clinic’s capabilities.
  • Need advanced diagnostic testing, including imaging or lab work.
  • Require specialty consultations.
  • Are critically ill and need intensive monitoring or intervention.

To transfer a patient to OAESH:

  1. Complete the referral form below, or call us at 613-745-0123 to alert our team of an incoming patient.
  2. Send relevant medical history, imaging, lab results, and medications to help our team provide timely and effective care.

Once your patient arrives, OAESH’s emergency and specialty teams take over for advanced diagnostics and treatment as needed.

  1. To refer to a specialty department, complete the referral form below, or send an email to OAESH. If applicable, CC the relevant department.
  2. Send relevant medical history, imaging, lab results, and medications to help our team provide timely and effective care.

One of our emergency veterinarians will be assigned to the pet for VCPR purposes and will contact the owner prior to procedure per CVO regulations.

Please note the following preparation instructions:

  • Canine: If appropriate, please give your patient a sedating dose of gabapentin and trazadone (together) 2-3 hours prior to their visit
  • Feline: If appropriate, please give your patient a sedating dose of gabapentin the evening before, and 2-3 hours prior to their visit.
  • Please give your patient a dose of Cerenia to be administered 2-3 hours prior to visit.
  • Additional sedation is used at the time of the ultrasound procedure in order to obtain good images, and it is highly recommended that recent bloodwork has been performed prior to the procedure to allow us to accurately plan an appropriate protocol for each pet.
  • No food for 12 hours prior to ultrasound, water is encouraged. If a full bladder is required for the appointment, discourage urination for 1.5 hours prior to the visit.
  • The patient will be shaved for the procedure.
